Mini pickling cucumbers for a Latvian greenhouse

Adam is the starting recommendation for this job

If your plan is a greenhouse in Latvia and small whole pickles, start with Adam F1. It has documented greenhouse suitability, fruit set without insect pollination and an explicit small-pickle harvest target. It also has a Latvian seed-catalogue reference. Those facts give you a reason to investigate this exact cultivar.

Dirigent F1 is a credible greenhouse alternative, but the checked sources do not give a picking length in centimetres. If a documented miniature harvest is your deciding requirement, Adam is the clearer choice.

Here “mini” means a picking target of roughly 9 cm or less. To compare another space or priority, use Find my cucumber.

Save the name and the picking size together

The useful note for your growing plan is “Adam F1, pick at about 5–8 cm”. Johnny’s 2026 comparison chart puts Adam Gherkin at 2–3 inches under Harvest Length. That is explicit advice for a small harvest, rather than a guess that any larger cucumber can be picked early.

Bejo’s crop description separately gives 4–5 inch fruit, about 10–13 cm, and lists field and greenhouse growing. These figures describe different uses of the fruit. The 5–8 cm target does not mean an unpicked Adam cucumber stops growing at 8 cm.

Once fruit develops, keep the target handy and follow the picking checks. A few cucumbers picked to the intended size are more useful for your chosen recipe than discovering the whole crop has grown beyond it.

A small pickle still needs room for its plant

Bejo describes Adam as strongly growing. It also confirms parthenocarpy: fruit can form without pollination. Plan space to train and reach the vines instead of treating the word “mini” as a compact-plant claim.

Both Adam and Dirigent are described as parthenocarpic. You do not need to add a pollen-producing plant just to make them set fruit. If seedless fruit matters, Johnny’s pollination explanation also makes pollen isolation relevant: insects carrying pollen from other cucumber plants can change that result.

Greenhouse suitability does not automatically establish a particular pot size or compact habit. Decide whether your plants will occupy a soil bed or containers, then make the space and watering plan for that setup.

What would make you choose Dirigent instead?

If protected growing matters more than a precise miniature picking size, investigate Dirigent F1. Rijk Zwaan’s breeder profile describes a parthenocarpic gherkin for protected cultivation and outdoor systems, including supported growing.

The profile gives a length-to-width ratio of 3.2:1. That describes shape, not a length in centimetres: cucumbers of several sizes can share that ratio. Compact growth and a numeric harvest window remain unverified in this comparison.

Before replacing Adam with Dirigent for a whole-mini-pickle project, ask the supplier for its recommended picking lengths. Until you have that answer, keep Dirigent as an alternative with an unresolved size question rather than assuming the two varieties are interchangeable.

Use the Latvian listings to check the exact packet

Kurzemes Sēklas lists Adam F1 and Dirigent F1. Adam’s listing includes film-greenhouse cultivation and pickling use. These entries give you local catalogue references to investigate; check the packet name and growing instructions when obtaining seed.

A listing is not a current stock or delivery check. It also does not show how either variety performed in a trial in your greenhouse. The recommendation combines the named cultivar’s documented traits with your intended use.

Make the greenhouse plan before choosing a date

A heated greenhouse and an unheated one are different starting points. Note whether yours is heated, observe the overnight conditions and check the seed instructions. The word Latvia alone cannot supply a reliable sowing or planting date.

• Record the cultivar and your intended picking length on the plant label or in your notes.
• Arrange room for the vines, support and access to water. Covered growing still leaves you responsible for checking moisture.
• Decide how often you can inspect developing fruit. A small-pickle target needs a picking routine that can catch it.
